10 Best Wedding Venues in Decatur GA For Every Budget

(Updated for 2024)

Whether you're splurging on a big celebration or DIY-ing a more intimate gathering, this list has all the best wedding venues in Decatur, Georgia in one place.

If you’re looking for Atlanta wedding venues, then look no further than Decatur! From arty restaurants to National Historic Landmarks, from ethical non-profits to spacious atriums populated by dinosaurs (dead ones, obviously), Decatur has a variety of venues to suit any wedding budget.

Situated less than five miles from downtown Atlanta, and a half hour drive from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the historic city of Decatur is connected and accessible - an inclusive, walkable location that has everything to host your celebration.

I’ve lived in Decatur for over eight years, and as a wedding photographer am lucky to have had the opportunity to work in many different venues, of differing sizes and characters.

If you’re looking for something on the cheaper end that you can bring your own vision to, or are planning a blow-out, once-in-a-lifetime mega party, then what follows is a list of Decatur’s best wedding venues that should have something for everyone. Oh, and in no particular order, since that’s the only fair way to do it.

Fernbank Museum

THE FEELS: UNIQUE / MODERN / SPECTACULAR

Fernbank Museum, while technically not in the City of Decatur, is so close it might as well be. (It’s not cheating, honest.) A stone’s throw from downtown Decatur, this Atlanta landmark seamlessly weaves together history, nature and multiple spaces for celebration. It’s been open since 1992, but its history goes much further back, starting with Emily Harrison in the late 1800’s, who led the charge to preserve the 65 acres of now urban forest that surround the property.

Couples who choose Fernbank Museum for their wedding do so because they want a unique, impressive, dramatic (yet lighthearted) venue to host their celebration. I mean, how else can you describe a place in which an 86 foot high glass ceiling towers above gigantic dinosaur skeletons?

The staff are welcoming, knowledgeable and experienced, and they’ll help you configure the multiple rooms they have, regardless of the size of the occasion. The combination of indoor and outdoor spaces means there are various ways to plan your day, and numerous locations for your ceremony and reception.

Whatever the weather, the size of the property means there are so many spots around Fernbank that are perfect for photos. During the day, The Great Hall has so much natural light, it’s impossible to take a bad picture. The Wildwoods and Fernbank Forest, with their elevated treetop walkway and multiple sculptural enclaves make for almost unending locations for amazing photos.

716 West

(Formerly The Mary Gay House)

THE FEELS: HISTORIC / VERSATILE / CASUAL

Rental director Kimberly Hilson says that 716 West is the “best kept secret gem in Decatur”, and for good reason. A 200 year old antebellum home that’s on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s a smaller, budget friendly venue on a quiet street, minutes walk from downtown Decatur, that’s equally capable of accommodating casual brides who are happy DIY-ing everything, to larger celebrations that include outside catering, food trucks, live bands and more. “Couples spend on average around $12-15,000 on their weddings here, but I’ve seen brides spend as little as $5,000 on everything” says Kimberly.

“We’ve had so many different types of celebrations, from classic and traditional to Bridgerton themed weddings, but all you really need are linens, fresh flowers and candles to bring the space to life” says Kimberly. “You can really just let the natural charm of the venue do the work for you.”

With the large main Simpson Room featuring multiple French doors onto the landscaped patio, multiple working fireplaces and additional spaces that can be used as buffets and bars, 716 West is able to work in any season. The venue has negotiated special rates for local nearby hotels, and has two getting ready rooms on the property.

716 West was formerly ‘The Mary Gay House’, but don’t let the name change fool you. “We’ve had many LGBTQ couples wanting to come here to ‘Marry Gay’”, Kimberly laughs. “Just because we’re no longer The Mary Gay House doesn’t mean you can’t marry gay!” 716 West is still an inclusive venue and is open to any celebration, whether that’s a wedding, rehearsal dinner, baby shower, business meeting or something else. As the rental director, Kimberly will also be on site during your event, “I’ve been able to do a place setting since I was six years old” she chuckles, so you’re in good hands!

You’re not restricted by a preferred vendor list, though they will of course happily give you suggestions. Another bonus that not many venues offer is that couples may also bring in their own alcohol.

The Solarium offers a range of indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing you to customize your wedding day to your vision. Whether you dream of an al fresco garden wedding, an intimate indoor ceremony, or a combination of both, this venue can accommodate it.

A short distance from downtown Atlanta, the Oakhurst village neighborhood is a vibrant, welcoming area that sports multiple restaurants, bars and coffee spots. The Chapel on Sycamore

THE FEELS: CLASSIC / FLEXIBLE / CENTRAL

The Chapel on Sycamore is surrounded on three sides by churches: Episcopal, Presbyterian and Methodist, so you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s still a house of worship. But this beautiful building in the middle of downtown Decatur is now a secular multi-functional event space that’s perfect for weddings of any size.

Capacity

Rates

Parking

Street parking. Reserved parking (~22 spots) across from the venue for family / vendors. Parking available for rent from First United Methodist church on E Ponce De Leon Ave.

Finally opening in November 2022 after a pandemic-delayed refurb, The Chapel on Sycamore’s spacious main hall with lofty wood beam ceilings and golden-hued stained glass windows is the heart of the venue, and unlike the majority of churches can be flipped from ceremony site to reception dinner space, seating up to 240.

Renovated church space with stained glass windows and tall ceilings.

The Chapel on Sycamore’s main hall seats up to 240 for a reception dinner

This kind of adaptability, especially considering the size and character of the space, is in short supply in Decatur - as Director Lisa Milko notes: “If you're searching for a top-tier venue in Atlanta that rivals the size and adaptability of esteemed locations like those found in Downtown, Inman Park or Midtown, look no further than The Chapel on Sycamore. We offer unparalleled versatility and elegance, setting us apart as the premier choice for your event.”

So why else should couples consider The Chapel on Sycamore? “First of all, your friends probably haven’t gotten married here, because it’s brand new," she says with a smile, before re-emphasizing the latitude couples have when choosing the venue: “It has that church feel, without being a church,” meaning, if you want a church wedding vibe, without having to navigate the various hurdles that come with such an event, then The Chapel on Sycamore is the perfect fit.

Former church space with high beamed ceilings and stained glass windows on both sides.
Church bell tower with red door and old stonework.

Couples can bring their own celebrant, have whatever readings or speeches they choose, and listen to whatever music they want. To that point, not only do they have a working church organ, full AV capabilities and a projector, they also have a fully functional choir loft, so couples can even hire a choir to serenade them!

As mentioned before, The Chapel on Sycamore is bang in the middle of downtown, making it exceptionally convenient. Guests and couples who choose to stay nearby are so close to Decatur Square with its multiple restaurants, bars and stores, along with the rest of Decatur’s amenities - it makes it so logistically easy to plan a rehearsal dinner, wedding, afterparty and post-wedding brunch. Hotels are walkable or a quick cab ride away, and since you’re minutes walk from the Decatur Marta station, you not only able to access the rest of Atlanta easily, but out-of-town guests are an easy 45 minute MARTA ride from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Moore Chapel at Decatur Legacy Park

THE FEELS: QUAINT / INTIMATE / ETHICAL

Decatur’s Legacy Park is on the 77 acre site of what used to be the United Methodist Children’s Home. Purchased by the City of Decatur in 2017, the grounds and historic buildings are now preserved for public enjoyment, and there’s also a multi-decade ‘Master Plan’ to bring Legacy Park up to date.

There are multiple areas where couples can tie the knot in Legacy Park, from the quaint Moore Chapel, to the more expansive and modern Hawkins Hall, which also holds receptions. If you’d prefer a tent for an outdoor ceremony and reception, there are multiple scenic locations offering a variety of compelling environments, including the grand lawn, meadows, a small lake, and an old stone barn. These settings, as well as other historic buildings on the property, offer many interesting photo opportunities as well.

Couples consider Legacy Park for their wedding because of the relationship that the community has with the location, says Dymond Generette, Programs Manager for Legacy Decatur. This isn’t a custom-built wedding factory, but instead an active, inclusive, community-focused project that encourages people of all faiths and creeds to participate. “Decatur and all the neighbors know and care for each other - that’s a really big pull to a lot of the couples that get married here. They call Decatur their home and would like to give back while celebrating”, she says. “The property history, convenient location, affordable packages, and community aspect in Decatur are the main aspects as to why a couple books their wedding at Legacy Park.”

Inside Moore Chapel

On the subject of giving back, couples choosing to get married at Legacy Park do so in the knowledge that they are supporting the Legacy Decatur 501(c)(3) and all the associated non-profit community-based programs and projects that perpetuate the community values for future generations. In addition, for example, couples searching for catering options can choose to employ the on-site Refugee Women’s Network.

The rear of Moore Chapel

With its charming ambiance, historic significance, and picturesque surroundings, Moore Chapel is an charming venue. It is over 100 years old, and all of the wood is original and preserved which is rare to find. There were originally chairs in the Chapel, but pews were added in 1960. The pews were actually made for children to sit in, and the adults used to stand in the back.

Dymond also mentions that “The stained glass is definitely one of the attractions for people.” The soft glow of natural light filtering through the stained glass windows creates a peaceful atmosphere for your ceremony, and it’s important to note that while Moore Chapel has that ‘church feel’, any denominations are welcome.

Hawkins Hall, just a short walk from Moore Chapel, has room for 100 guests

Moore Chapel can comfortably accommodate up to 80 seated guests, making it an ideal choice for couples seeking an intimate wedding experience. The venue provides essential amenities to ensure a seamless event, including bridal and groom suites. Master gardeners that were formerly children at the children’s home are employed to manicure the gardens around the chapel, which means regardless of season, it’s going to look beautiful.

Legacy Park wedding fees include two wedding party preparation rooms, tables and chairs, and use of a ceremony and reception space on site. For all other services (catering, bar support, support staff, linens, cutlery etc) you have the opportunity to choose your own licensed vendors.

Sun In My Belly

THE FEELS: ARTSY / HOMEY / VINTAGE

Sun In My Belly is another restaurant venue (actually they refer to themselves as a café), slightly smaller than Wahoo Grill or Scout, and thus probably more suited to a more intimate celebration. I say smaller, but the venue can still accommodate up to around 100 guests, which for some is still plenty of people. I mean, I had four people at my wedding. Six if you include me and my wife… Anyway, I digress.

Sun In My Belly has three rooms: the front room, the middle room, and the salon, which generally fall into the categories of buffet service space, ceremony space/dining room, and dancefloor respectively. Though of course they can be configured in a variety of ways, and you can also hire out as few rooms as you want, or do a full restaurant buyout. There is also plenty of space outside with both covered and uncovered patio areas. It’s a relaxed, cozy venue that brings to mind family gatherings and exuberant conversation. You can see more pictures of all their spaces here.

So, like Fernbank Museum earlier on in this list, Sun In My Belly isn’t in Decatur. I know, I failed you. I’m a stinky fibber. Not many sane people would compare a locally-owned restaurant with a giant museum that serves half a million visitors a year, but in my defense, they can both host weddings and are jolly good at it in their own way.

Also in my defense, Sun In My Belly is just 1200 feet from the City of Decatur’s border. That’s less than a quarter mile. A five minute walk. Probably 2 minutes if you do a little jog. Which is to say, it’s super close to all things Decatur, including Oakhurst and the East Lake MARTA station, but also just a mile from downtown Kirkwood.

The large vintage mirror and local artwork lend a boho, relaxed vibe to the space

Located in the historic Bailey’s Hardware building, Sun in my Belly has been bringing glorious food to private dinners and events for over 20 years. Founded in 1996, it has graduated from small catering company to a full-blown, many-hat-wearing triumph - a breakfast, lunch, and dinner café, as well as a full-service catering company that travels all over the southeast for events and weddings.

Alison Lueker is the founding brain behind it all! She was one of the OG chefs in town who hopped on the fresh, local, and seasonal food train. Her dishes are like little pieces of art, with a nature-inspired flair that has been her signature move since day one. Step into the café, and you'll find a vibe that's both young and eccentric, with an artsy twist. The atmosphere? Think relaxed rustic chic – the kind that instantly makes you feel at home. The place is lit up with a mix of vintage lights and playful string lighting, adding that extra cozy touch.

Letitia Pate Evans Hall can serve as the location for your ceremony too, though most couples opt for just using it as a reception venue, and what a grand one it is. This might be the closest you’ll get to Hogwarts castle in Decatur. The grand staircase, crafted from Brazilian cherry wood, adds a imposing touch as couples step into their new journey together. The soaring ceilings, large ornate windows and intricate pendant lights add to the ambiance, creating a magical stage for celebrations under the stars. Accommodating up to 400 guests, the hall's dining area is enhanced by an adjoining courtyard that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor charm.

There are also outdoor spaces to celebrate, in the Alumnae Garden, for example. A manicured lawn with plenty of space for shaded seating, surrounded by lush greenery and a quietly bubbling fountain forms the backdrop to your ceremony. Imagine raising toasts under the open sky, amidst the rustling leaves and gentle touch of nature.

The Anna I Young Alumnae House is conveniently located just steps away from the garden, and offers a welcoming space for the bridal party or groomsmen. What makes Agnes Scott college such a great venue is the variety of locations on campus for photos. Nature? Check. Historical, fairytale stone buildings? Check. Modern architecture? Check. The on-campus Dalton Gallery was built in 1965, and echoes some of the style of the older, more traditional college buildings, but with a modern twist.
